Just before being kissed by him, Daphne pleaded to her river god father for help, who transformed her into a laurel tree, thus foiling Apollo. Here she is changing into a coral reef as her finger and hair extend into seaweed. The mounting pressure of the sea depth captures the feeling Apollo has watching his lover change in his arms.
